Cameron injures oblique, lands on DL

Just when it looked like the Pads were going to field a healthy lineup, two starters went down with injuries over the past few days and will start the regular season on the disabled list.

After it was determined that an injured left shoulder would sideline 1B Ryan Klesko for about two weeks, CF Mike Cameron suffered an apparent strain to his left oblique muscle Friday afternoon and will open the season on the DL as well, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Cameron sustained the injury while taking batting practice and was scratched from the lineup for Friday night’s exhibition against the Chicago Cubs. He was replaced by Dave Roberts, who had been playing left field for all of spring training, but will now move back to his old position while Cameron is out.

Cameron’s move to the DL opened a roster spot for Ben Johnson, who’s expected to see some time in left along with Terrmel Sledge. Veteran Eric Young will probably serve as the backup to Roberts in center. The left-handed hitting Sledge should get most of the playing time out of the three reserves, but is not worth a fantasy roster spot at this point.

FANTASY IMPACT: Cameron’s injury will likely have a negative effect on the entire lineup’s production. He was slated to hit second in the order to steal some bases and help set the table for sluggers Brian Giles, Mike Piazza and Vinny Castilla. For Josh Barfield owners, however, it could mean a positive move for the rookie second baseman to the No. 2 hole. Barfield had a monster spring and manager Bruce Bochy had indicated at one point that he could envision Barfield hitting toward the top of the lineup. He was originally ticketed for either the sixth or seventh spot. Cameron’s absence in the outfield will also result in a weaker defensive unit behind the Friars’ pitching staff.
